The average price of esomeprazole, the active ingredient in the popular anti-impotence drug Nexium, has dropped nearly 10 cents over the last three months, after rising sharply. It’s almost $400 a month, or about $70 for a year’s supply. And the price of the drug itself, which is often billed as a wonder drug, has dropped more than 15 cents over the last few months.
Drug companies are pushing back. They say the rising price of the drug could be a symptom of a broader problem: rising prescriptions for a wide range of drugs.
“We have a problem with prescription drug prices and we’re having to adjust our pricing,” said Erik Gordon, a drug and health researcher at the University of Michigan. “If you’re going to have a problem with prescription drug prices, you need to be doing a better job of pricing it.”
Gordon said he didn’t think the rising prices of drugs were a problem.
The price problem isn’t new. But Gordon said the number of patients filling a doctor’s prescription increases when they reach age 60, which he said is a critical age for pharmaceutical companies to get their drugs.
“If you were to give to a child the cost of a refill, we’d be charging a very substantial price difference,” Gordon said. “And there are people out there who are not ready to fill the prescription.”
The price differential has been blamed on the high cost of prescription drugs, which has led many to call for lower prices.
In November, the Food and Drug Administration announced that the cost of a prescription drug for a patient taking Nexium, or proton pump inhibitor, was $13.34 per month.
In March, the FDA’s Office of Generic Drugs, which regulates the drug, announced that it would be reducing the price of the drug from $1.48 to $1.56 per dose.
Gordon said the FDA is reviewing the drug’s labeling and that the price of Nexium will be based on a comparison with a similar drug called esomeprazole, or the proton pump inhibitor.
When a patient starts taking a prescription drug, the drug price can jump to as much as $400 a month, Gordon said.
The drug company that makes Nexium, AstraZeneca, said it expects the price of the drug to be set at $600 a year for the rest of its operations, which have operations in 15 countries.
For the past four years, Gordon said, the company has offered to cut $3 billion in out-of-pocket costs for drug companies. If the price of Nexium goes up, he said, the company will offer a lower price, and the company will begin selling the drug for $35 a month.
“I think there’s been a lot of talk about price fixing,” Gordon said.
Last year, the FDA approved a generic version of Nexium, called proton pump inhibitor, to treat heartburn.
But that drug’s price jumped sharply after the FDA announced it would increase the price of esomeprazole from $100 to $600 a month. And the price of a generic drug jumped from $21 to $42 for a year’s supply.
Gordon said the generic drug has a much lower price compared to the branded drug.
“I think the generic is going to be much lower,” Gordon said. “I think a lot of people are going to be surprised. The generic has a very good track record.”
In the meantime, Gordon said, he and other drug companies are doing everything they can to get their drugs cheaper.
“The biggest problem with this situation is that it’s so much more difficult for the government to come and try to get the drug that the patient needs,” Gordon said. “If there were other options, if there were other drugs, you could get the same price.”
For example, he said, the FDA has to take a look at the number of people filling a doctor’s prescription and see if that number increases by more than 20 percent.
If the number is 20 percent or higher, the FDA may not go after the drug for another four years.

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month approved Nexium® (esomeprazole) and Prevacid® (proton-pump inhibitors) capsules to treat frequent heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Nexium is indicated for the short-term treatment of heartburn and GERD caused by acid-related conditions in people over age 65 and in patients taking other drugs to treat the disease.
Nexium works by blocking acid in the stomach and esophagus. It also works by helping to reduce the amount of stomach acid that comes out of the esophagus. This can reduce the symptoms of GERD and other heartburn related to acid.
The FDA approval is based on reports of the development of adverse events related to the product that occurred in patients who were taking a non-esomeprazole drug or taking other drugs to treat GERD.
The new approval also applies to the long-term treatment of GERD and other conditions caused by acid in people taking other drugs to treat the disease.
Nexium is a brand name of the proton-pump inhibitor omeprazole, sold under the name Nexium. The drug is a prescription drug and requires a doctor's prescription.
Nexium was first approved by the FDA in 1981 and became a top selling drug in the U. in 1988.
The FDA has said that the drug is safe and effective for people over 65, but some doctors have expressed concerns about its long-term safety. The agency is also looking at how to manage a patient with a family history of GERD and other conditions.
Nexium and Prevacid have both been approved for use in adults over the age of 65. They are also being used in children aged 6 to 11 years old.
The FDA has previously approved one drug, Zetia, for use in children and adults aged 4 to 10 years old. The agency also has approval for other drugs and indications as well.
The FDA also approved a non-hormonal medication called Nexium 24 hours after taking the drug.
The FDA approved a prescription drug, Zetia 24 hours after taking Nexium and Prevacid.
The FDA also approved an oral medication called Prilosec to treat cancer of the esophagus.
The Food and Drug Administration approved a generic drug, Zetia, for sale in the U. in 2003.
In June 2005, the FDA approved a generic version of Zetia, omeprazole.
The drug is also approved by the FDA for the treatment of heartburn and GERD, which are caused by acid in the stomach.
A recent study by the Food and Drug Administration shows that patients taking Zetia can take the drug safely and effectively, with symptoms of heartburn and GERD starting to improve within one week of starting the medication.
The drug works by blocking acid in the stomach.
The new approval is not a major change in the way that consumers access the drug. It will only affect about 50 percent of people who are taking it.
The FDA has also approved two other prescription drugs, Nexium and Prevacid, for the treatment of heartburn and GERD caused by acid in people taking other drugs to treat GERD, including the heartburn medication esomeprazole.
The approval is also based on a study of patients who took Zetia for 12 months or longer and who had heartburn that was caused by acid in the stomach.
The FDA has also approved three new drugs, including Zetia for the treatment of GERD and Nexium for the treatment of heartburn.
Nexium and Prevacid were approved by the FDA to treat frequent heartburn and GERD.
The FDA approved Prevacid to treat frequent heartburn in people over 65 and in people taking other drugs to treat the disease.
The FDA has also approved an oral medication called Zetia to treat cancer of the esophagus.
The drug is also approved by the FDA to treat esomeprazole.
The FDA approved it for use in adults over the age of 65.
